Another Top 10 MegaChurch – Brooklyn Tabernacle & Your Tithe

Usher: Hey Deak, here’s another one of the top 10 “Most influential churches in America” according to The Church Report http://www.thecronline.com/mag_article.php?mid=672&mname=July – and it appears they don’t have any desire whatsoever to tell you where your money goes!

I stumbled upon this forum where internals including those who are asking for accountability have a very lively discussion – apparently Mr. Cymbala answers to NO ONE……

Some excerpts by the first guy who is asking for accountability (obviously a member) and then one of his internal people who comments on the site:

Paul White:Like I said- He’s got you all hoodwinked. While you were working there did you ever see a financial statement that was made available to the public? The answer is no, you never have. So what that he GIVES ALL the proceeds of his books back to the church, he’s said plenty of times from the pulpit that he recieves no salary, so my question to you is- how then does he support himself? The bottom line is this, he has NO RIGHT at all not to disclose financial info. You obviously think that he is above being held accountable thereby deifing him.

Anonymous Insider:  I hate to say it but Paul White is 100% Correct. BT is in financial trouble. A recent meeting where the Financial Pastor told the leaders “please do not share this with anyone, but once we pay the mortgage we have no money left in the bank”. Some of the leaders in the room suggested sharing the situation with the congregation but The Financial Pastor said he does not even share his financial matters at home with his children so why would he share it with the leaders or the church. They are currently undergoing a construction project worth appx 250,000.00 for childrens ministry space at thier 180 location. Pastor Cymbala has become a fund raiser and in my 25+ years at that church he has never begged for money as he does now. The financail pressure is killing him. He has lost his annointing. In a recent Leaders Meeting July 2008 he told the leaders “This is my church, Things will be done my way, If you do not like it there is the door”. “I do not trust any of the leaders and If you think I am going to hand over my church that my wife and I built for 30 years you have another thing coming” “There is only one choir in the church MY WIFE’S CHOIR”. “I am sending my spies into your meetings to bring back to me reports so you better beware”.

  1. Meg Says:

Can you say megalomaniac? I knew you could!

  2. Mark Says:

It’s his church. He would prefer if you just left God out of it.

  3. Cop Says:

“I do not trust any of the leaders ,
“There is only one choir in the church MY WIFE’S CHOIR”,
“I am sending my spies into your meetings to bring back to me reports so you better beware”.

Nice to know that the pastor lets the holy spirit lead him and that he has a heart for people, and serving others.

  4. Mark R Says:

I agree with Mark!! It’s his church ….

  5. Paul White Says:

You think ministry watch or any other groups might have gotten wind of this? Maybe they’ll put some pressure on him. I personally think that Cymbala is more in the mold of a Hank Hannigraff than a Creflo Odallar when it comes to integrity issues. The doctrine that he preaches is in the line with pentocastal teaching but he does preach the cross and love. It’s just that he’s caught up in the grips of greed and power. I would hate to see the whole Church get hit because of him. What’s ashame is, is that we have everyone who’s notable come speak at our Church, Tony Evans, Ravi Zecharia, Billy Grahams Daughter, Hank Hannigraff and the list goes on. Everyone wants to hitch their wagon to the BT machine so they can sell their books! And when things start to fall apart they’ll all be jumping off that sinking ship like rats. Hopefully, Jim Cymbala wakes up and falls in line.

  6. Joe E. Says:

Pastor Cymbala basically feels that he is above the Law. For years the Methodist Church has put pressure on him to remove their logo that he was using on his bulletins and business cards. When people confronted him on this he shrugged it off, and ignored the warnings until finally he could not ignore the fact that what he was doing was basically illegal. Only then did he remove the logo. He is above the law, or so he thinks. He Answers to nobody. NOBODY. He constantly screams at his leaders and humiliates them. A deacon who has been there for 30 years mention that he is a tyrant. The big issue is that people constantly say go to him and confront him. Yet when you do he REFUSES to listen and his favorite saying is “I have been in ministry for 35 years”. Well, like one wise person said “so has Castro”. His thinks that as long as he is helping people it doesn’t basically matter if anyone gets hurt. His motto is “well they hurt Jesus as well” or “get over it”, or another famous saying “I will put my fruit up against anyone’s fruit”. The reason there is a blog is because he refuses to listen to sound reasoning but is a master manipulator and has the ability to turn the tables on anyone who comes to him one on one to confront him. People are petrified of him. So he has created an atmosphere of fear and his people are kept in check.

  7. Berian Says:

    “Pastoral staff,”

I took the time to analyze your points in light of the comments previously made.

    1A.”same leadership for 35 yrs.”

Consider the following: Cuba has been under the same leadership for a very long time. Does length of time really mean anything? The question is one of quality not quantity.

    1B.”and God has faithfully provided.”

Consider the following: Many ministries make the same claim. We both know some of those ministries are doing tremendous harm to the body. It stands to reason, monetary gain is not necessarily a mark of God’s provision or approval.

1C.”invoices are current within 30 days.”

Consider the following: Do current accounts negate what has been written regarding the financial state of the church? Are you prepared to divulge what kind of debt the church is in? Should the members be kept in the dark?

    2.”Financial statements are reviewed.”

Consider the following: This statement appears to be another diversionary ploy. Do the people know how much money the church brings in, where it goes, and how much the pastor’s make? Do you think they should know? If your answer is no, you are in the minority among Christian organizations.

3.”The board consists of six people who provide oversight.”

Consider the following: Who are they and why are you reluctant to release their names? Better yet, who has been on the board and why were they removed? What does oversight mean? Was the current construction project reviewed by the board? The Senior Pastor is not the president of the board, is he?

4.”The Senior Pastor’s door remains open.”

Here, you revealed yourself. Why are the first and last points about you? What if entering that door yielded no results? How many people have tried your preferred method only to come away disappointed and confused. No sir, your door is no longer worth stepping through and the blame for that rests at your feet. Besides, you chose to enter this arena, far removed from the controlled environment you work so hard to maintain.

In summary, your statements failed to correct the “erroneous comments.” What exactly are you prepared to deny about what was written? Please provide a direct answer or remain silent.

Every call to public repentance requires a unique set of steps. I will not bother describing what must be done. I think you know. For the benefit of the church, do the right thing.

  8. Something to Consider Says:

The reason that there is activity on this board is because there cannot be healthy dialogue with the Senior Pastor, or those in leadership on this matter. Indeed, over the years many have attempted to address such concerns as expressed on this board face-to-face only to promptly be shown the door that seems to be wide open only on the way out.

Dissent is quickly silenced at BT – just like it is in China, just like it is Myanamar, just like it is Iran, and any other country whose government does not respect human rights. A visit to these countries might leave you with the appearance of peace and unity but underneath is anger, confusion, and fear.

While the loyalty of those who claim to “love my pastor” or those who assert,“leave my church alone” is touching, it is also dangerously naïve. Such sentiment resembles more party politics than anything else and Paul warns us of it in 1 Corinthians 1:12. No one here is launching a personal attack on the Senior Pastor however, that does not mean that he is above reproach.

Many who have posted on this board are correct: the Senior Pastor at BT has little, or no accountability. Over the years, this reality has created an environment in which the rights of men and women to not only think for themselves, but also express themselves without fear or repercussion has been fostered. Wittingly, or unwittingly the result is a fear-based culture at BT. A fear-based society happens in states and countries where leaders grow in power and arrogance, and citizens become slaves or robots. It’s called “totalitarianism” and it should come as no surprise that the Gospel message is repressed under these governments. And yes, the same principle can be at work in a church too.

What is going on here is not a rebellion as described in Romans 13, but rather you are hearing the concerns of those who are striving to not allow a person or a system lord over their faith or conscience. It didn’t happen over night; it’s been in the works for a while.

On a final note, I would remind you all of a very brave Rosa Parks when she refused to obey a perverse and corrupt law to move to the “colored section” of the bus 53 years ago in Montgomery, Alabama. Her refusal set off a series of events in which non-violent protest (centered on the love of God) transformed an entire nation. Didn’t they try to reason with the powers that be? When their cries fell on deaf ears they mobilized and united to stand against oppression. Tell me, were they rebellious?

Yes, we must pray for our leaders and respect them. That is true. But we also need to keep them accountable – especially when we are investing our lives and monies to support their endeavors.

  9. You were Made For More Says:

In Pastor Cymbala’s new book You Were Made For More he speaks of a woman named Roberta Langella. He totally lied about her life to create a sensational story to sell his book. Here is what the sister of Roberta had to say on the blog.

    1. Page 157 states:(a)“In the ensuing years, Roberta has become a remarkable woman of God, ministering in several areas of our church. She headed up our outreach to the homeless for quite a while”.(b)“She currently teaches in our Downtown Learning Center, helping young people and adults acquire employable skills in decorative painting and fashion design. Her smile and enthusiasm are a blessing to everyone she meets. We all admire her courage to keep going, even when she doesn’t feel well”.

Comment:(a) Roberta and the ministry were showcased in the “He’s Been Faithful Video”, and it was a ministry near and dear to her heart. She worked tirelessly for this ministry, despite her compromised physical condition. After the success of the video, Roberta was abruptly told that there would no longer be a homeless ministry. The only explanation given was that “we aren’t THAT kind of church. While Roberta was in charge of the ministry, she received a small stipend from the church, because she was on disability. Shortly after the ministry ended, she became so ill that she couldn’t work, and it was at this time that the church told her they could no longer “afford” to give her the stipend. She never uttered a single negative word, as she has always been fiercely loyal to Pastor Cymbala, but I know she was extremely wounded by that, but never questioned him about it.
    (b) Since that time, Roberta has rebounded health-wise, and started working in the Downtown Learning Center, as described above. Due to her struggles with depression, she gave up the teaching post, and has not taught there in almost a year. The leadership of the church is well aware of this and the reasons for her departure from that ministry.

    2. Page 157 states:“In early 2003, she became very sick. She had repeated bouts of pneumonia, plus pancreatitis…..it is not exaggerating to say that she almost died that day. In the middle of her physical weakness and emotional loneliness…”

Comment: Roberta did almost die several times during the year that she was sick, six months of which were in a nursing home. Pastor Cymbala visited her once during that entire year. When she was released from the nursing home, she struggled with the day-to-day chores due to her being only 90 lbs. and extremely weak. The church did not set up any kind of ongoing support system to help her,“in the middle of her physical weakness and emotional loneliness”. Roberta confessed to me many times that she felt completely “abandoned” by BT. A few faithful friends would visit and help out when they could, but Roberta had to rely solely on the help of her family to get her through those difficult times.

    3. Page 160 states:“…She clings to the Holy Spirit for strength to keep that door closed in her life. She is stamping out the appeal of the flesh through the enabling power of God”.

Comment: The truth of the matter is that although my sister desires to walk in freedom, her life, at this time, does not reflect what has been written here, which is well known by Pastor Cymbala and other members of the pastoral staff. Once again, it pains our family that the hardships of my sister would be deliberately exploited and the facts twisted for financial gain “in the name of Jesus”.
    .
In closing, I’d like to reiterate my purpose for this statement. I do not believe that Pastor Cymbala initially set out to hurt or exploit Roberta. Nevertheless, that is what has been done, and our family is crying out over this injustice. Also, there seems to be a disconnect between the leadership of the church and its members with regard to addressing the suffering and hurt of multitudes of people by the leadership. I understand that with a church of this size, it is not possible for Pastor Cymbala to individually address each and every problem that people face. That is not what is being asked of him. What is being asked is that TRUTH be reinstated in the fabric of the belief system of BT, and that the leadership, starting with Pastor Cymbala, listen to the cry of the heart of his people, and not dismiss them or label them without first ‘listening” with an open heart. Just as the truth of my sister’s life has been distorted, or sensationalized, for the good of the church, I believe many lives have been crushed by that same mindset, and that this blog is a result of the refusal of the leadership to stand for TRUTH. May God Bless You All.

Sounds like Pastor Cymbala is fabricating stories to sell a book that others have said sounds more like a Joel Olsteen Self Help Book because people love sensational stories, and it helps sell books. What a sham. He needs to be exposed.

  11. Mr. Cymbala of Brooklyn Tabernacle should be included in the “Grassley’s 6″ « Says:

    [...] http://deaconandusher.wordpress.com/2008/08/18/another-top-10-megachurch-brooklyn-tabernacle-your-ti… [...]

  12. Back to the Issues 1 Says:

1 Corinthians 5:12 Reads,” I’m not responsible for what outsiders do, but don’t we have a responsibility for those within our community of believers? God decides on the outsiders, but we need to decide when our brothers and sisters are out of line and if necessary, clean house.”
Through out history, men and women have raised their voices to speak out against all kinds of injustice, Because of their efforts, slaves were set free, the horrors of the concentration camps were exposed and lives were spared. To accomplish this, some wrote articles using fictitious names to draw attention to the cause (i.e. people involved in the underground rail road); others spoke out openly and used the weight of their names to validate the cause.(i.e. William Wilber-force). God has always used people to shine light in dark places. Including dark places in the church. Martin Luther did this when he addressed the abuse and manipulation that was prevalent in the church of that day, via “Public postings”. To some, he was view as a “tool of Satan, a gossip, a trouble maker” but to those who hungered for truth, his testimony was heard, investigated and received. Why the history lesson? History has a way of reinforcing truth or revealing lies and History also reveals patterns in behavior. With an open mind, let’s review some of the patterns in the Brooklyn Tabernacle.
    Pattern # 1
    Pastors who were fired.
    1. Impaglia
    2. Bowman
    3. Combs-was fired on his birthday
    4. Lorenzo
    5. ONeill
    6. Maldonado
    7. Hannon
    Pastors who “moved on”
9.Mcdonald- was demoted from administrative pastor
    10. Taledo – Was asked by PJC to leave
    11. Pena- Saw the writing on the wall and moved on.
As for Pastor Hammond, he was removed from his administrative duties one time too many, had his income cut and was forced to seek employment elsewhere.
In addition to these pastors, since 2004 more than 50 employees have been fired or have resigned. Why?
Truth or Lies? You decide. In the statement posted by the Brooklyn Tabernacle pastoral staff they assert that the leadership has remained the same for 35 years. If this statement is true, then the above is a lie. In reality, this statement like most statements from the leadership is at best a half truth. This response only highlights the obvious.

  13. Back to the Issues 2 Says:

Pattern # 2) BT is a family business. It was started by a family member Claire (Carol’s father) passed down to Carol and Jim. In 1997 Pastor Hammond was demoted so that Al Toledo (son in law) could take his rightful place. If we follow the pattern, either Al will return to BT or Pastor Brian Pettrey (son in law) will inherit the business. Who are the members on the Board? Why is it a secret.

    Pattern # 3.

    Lack of Financial accountability:
At the start of the building project, members in the congregations were ask by PJC to “give sacrificially” so that the church could do the following
    1. Build a gym for troubled inner-city youth. People gave, it never happened.
    2. A 24 hour crisis center for gang members. People gave, it never happened
    3. Homeless children brought to the church. People gave, the church took pictures of these children to Washington DC and received faith based money from the government for this project. The Children were allowed to come once and then leadership pulled the plug.
    4. There was also talk from the pulpit of a school, daycare for single mothers and much much more. Again people gave and it never happened. At what point do we hold the leadership accountable? People gave wedding rings, took out second mortgages on their homes, equity lines of credit, gave the monies they saved for their children’s college education and the above did not happen. Instead, PJC Built Churchill’s Restaurant which failed within the first year. To add insult to injury when the people gave, there was never an announcement of what was given, no written financial statement to show how much money was collected. Were the bills paid? Was the crisis over? Will the gym be built? Nothing

  14. Back to the Issues 3 Says:

    Pattern #4 Abuse of Money.

Fact. PJC lives in a home that is worth over 5 million dollars.
Fact, The church pays for all of his personal expenses. Staff members fix every leak, every plumbing problem, paint and remodel his home on a regular basis.
His house keeper and gardeners salary are also paid for by the church.
Baby sitting for his grand children, remodeling of Toledo and Pettery’s homes are also paid by the church. The entire remodel of his mother’s home was paid for by the church. Remodeling of a vacation home in Florida was also done by employees of the church. By the way, this is all done during church hours. When these employees are gone for months at a time, the church building is neglected, projects come to a halt and the work load becomes heavy for others. Were they paid for these services? NO. They are salaried employees who make very little. Could they object to doing the work? The ones who did are included in the list of those who were fired. Oh by the way, the other pastors do not enjoy this benefit. No one shovels the snow for them in the winter mornings, only Al and Jim enjoyed that benefit. No one parks their cars for them. All of this is demanded of the staff. Many have never received raises; one person after working at BT for 15years had only a $10 contribution made by the church into their 401b retirement. On His death bed, Pastor Byrd was promised that sister Byrd would be provided for. Pastor Byrd served faithfully at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. He began laboring there when the church was called The Brooklyn gospel tabernacle. After his death, Sister Byrd received a call from the church informing her that the church would not support her. It was a sister church in New Jersey that came to her aide. Now you understand why she attends that church. When this news reached the ears of some concerned members at BT people began talking and questioning or as some would say “Gossiping”. Because of their “gossip”, Sister Byrd gets some support from BT. The amount is small but at least it’s something. The bible instructs the church to care for widows especially those who served in the church. This act by BT. goes against scripture. The truth is bothers and sisters, the bible says let not your ways be evil spoken of. In other words, if your actions appear to be questionable or dishonest people will talk. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:2 we have renounced secret and shameful ways, we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly, we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. Brother and sisters, the answer is simple. All BT has to do is open the books, Produce financial statements, Produce the minuets from the board meetings, prove that these statements are false. Financial disclosure is a legal issue. The minuets from board meetings is a matter of protocol. The issue bothers and sisters, is not slander or gossip. The issue is Accountability. The deception has to stop. Deception about Churchill’s, deception about why Pastors, Staff members and members in the congregation have left and the deception about the finances. There is no doubt that the ministry of the Brooklyn tabernacle has been a blessing to many. The poor have heard the gospel. The music has blessed many and lives have been changed to the glory of God. However, this same work has made poor choices i.e. spending over a million dollars on marble for the smith street building, fired countless people including godly pastors and staff members. Conducting many building projects with out permits and not respecting OSHA codes. Which by the way led to a staff member becoming crippled. This brothers and sisters is a serious matter. If you love BT. you must pray and having done so you must stand and raise your voice. But do this only if you love the church. Do this only if you

  15. Sue Langella Says:

I would like to publicly apologize for posting my comments on the blog, and have personally gone to Pastor Cymbala to ask his forgiveness for doing so. This is now a private family matter, and we believe in God’s ability to restore.

  16. The Toledos Says:

What is even worse is that the abuse of power and the abusive leadership practices described here have been handed down for posterity to the next generation of leaders…namely, the Toledos of Chicago Tabernacle. Pastor Al Toledo is worse than his mentor. He is an abusive, godless narcissist who believes he is above the law. God help him if the members of that church ever decide to tell the truth about what goes on there.

    Why PJC?

  18. Alberto Hernandez III Says:

I grew up in BT. I’m not here to agree or disagree with anyone in this chat. What I want to do is address those who are making claims of impropriety and lack of disclosure. Why is it that you are unwilling to sign your posts with your real name? Are you also stricken with the fear of PJC you claim BT leaders and members are oppressed with. Is it maybe everything you have written is a sack of horse crap coming from the heart of vindictive people with entitlement complexes. Whatever the case, stand up and be counted. Sign your name or shut the hell up.

Before any of you write that I’m just a PJC lackey, ask around. You will find that Alberto Hernandez III and PJC have not seen eye to eye on many things. I dont care what you say about him, but have the courage to sign your name to it. Otherwise, your just a silly little coward with an axe to grind. Pathetic.

  19. BT Deacon Says:

Hey Deacon and Usher, Seems BT Deacons and Leadership are keeping tabs on their members tithe. The below posting comes from a topix forum where a Brooklyn Tabernacle Deacon posted very slanderous comments about a fellow deacon who obviously left the church. They revealed private information that was obviously sent in an email which is now made public by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Leadership. I am going to leave the peoples name and the content of the posting out of this because I do not want to contribute to the slanderous, demonic, and evil accusations made against them, but I do want to expose the practices of Brooklyn Tabernacle Leadership and Deacons. They obviously monitor their members as well as thier leaders tithe and then when someone leaves the church or has issues with the leadership they post slanderous comments about that person and reveal that they have not paid their tithes. I thought that this was private information?

Below is the posting by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Leader/Deacon and an excerpt from the posting regarding their fellow Deacons thithe:

Since Brooklyn Tabernacle is such a hot bed for gossip I heard that His son-in-law Pastor Al Toledo is coming back. They are working on it now. They are in discussions about his immediate role and his eventual Senior Pastor Role. Even though when Pastor Toledo was a Pastor at the Brooklyn Tabernacle and got into a fist fight with his brother in law and threw him on the floor in a church office and threatened him. Even though he has chased dozens upon dozens of leaders from his Church in Chicago, he is still coming back to be Senior Pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Seems like this strong arm mentality is needed at Brooklyn tabernacle to keep the deacons in place who go on and share private information about other deacons who left the church as stated above in the BT Deacon Post. I just read a bunch of comments about this on a Topix Web Site where these things are revealed. There is a link there to this website and that is how I found this. It is all very sick and Back to the Issues seems to be telling the truth.

Just wait within the next year or so He will be back…….Guaranteed!!!

  21. comments from BT Pastor Says:

    Hey Deacon and Usher,

Seems like a current or ex pastor from Brooklyn Tabernacle went on the blog and ask Pastor Cymbala a serious question. Supposedly there was this document that pastor Cymbala snatched out of one of his associate pastors hands and told him “you did not see this”. I Wonder what was on that piece of paper? Could it be that a Man of God, a Pastor of a Mega Church would actually be commiting some kind of Financial Fraud or Illegal Financial practice??? The person goes on to say that the associate pastor was given a very FAT sevarance package and signed a disclosure that he would never testify to what he saw. Sounds like someone got PAID OFF to SHUT UP! Could this be true?

HE also spoke about how the Senior Pastor Jim Cymbala begged the congregation for money to build a Youth Center with a Gym for inner city teens. People gave and it Never Happened. But now he is spending hundereds of thousands of dollars on a childrens church and the reason this persons says is because when children do not come to church parents do not come to church, and when parents do not come to church money does not come to church and tithes pays our salary. The reason he is not building a youth center? Youth do not bring in money, most of their parents do not come to church. Sounds like a Business to me.

    Sounds

  22. Family Business Says:

Hello Deacon and Usher. I thought you would like to know that it is official that Brooklyn Tabernacle is bringing back Pastor Al Toledo. He is the son in law who beat up his brother in law in a church office while he was an Associate Pastor at Brooklyn Tabernacle in 2000. They should name the church WWF Tabernacle.

This is so very sad. But this is the result of years of abuse that never has been properly addressed. Years of people turning their heads the other way out of total fear. Years of reaping the benefits and then holding steadfast to a position, and yet not willing to rock the boat and lose that position.
This is a pattern that I myself have witnessed over the years and partook of. It is very disheartening. And I am as guilty as the rest. So many times I wish I would have stood up but like the rest I just stood their silent.
Pastor Cymbala I want to ask you a question: What was on the piece of paper that you so abruptly grabbed out of Pastor O’Neil’s hand and said to him “you never saw this”?
What was on that piece of paper that caused you to make Pastor O’Neil sign a disclosure when you offered him a very large severance package saying he would never disclose the information on that document?
I just have to remind you: God saw what was on that piece of paper and you can try to hide and cover it up but you know that you will answer to God for it.
The New Building project at 180 is not about children. It is about money. A quote from you Pastor Jim “when children do not come to church, parents do not come to church, when parents do not come to church they do not tithe. Tithing pays our salary. The reason for the new childrens facility is to bring in more adults. The sister who came from Washington told you about the One Million Dollars her pastor put into the Children’s Ministry and how it doulbed the tithes.
Why wouldn’t you keep to your promise to build a Youth Center and instead build a larger children’s church? Answer: Youth do not bring in tithes. Most of them come alone without their parents so it is not financially feasible to build a youth center because the profit would be far less then building a Childrens Church. You promised the youth and the church and begged them to give. What did you do with all of that money you collected from those people who gave sacrificially for a youth center? If you are so concerned about the finances of the church. Sell your $5,000,000.00 Home and buy a condo. It is only you and Carol anyway, why do you need such a BIG HOME when your parishoners who “pay your salary” live in the projects?

  24. Reply to A. Hernandez Says:

It is easy for you to speak as such since you are far removed from this church. Just look at the BT Forum and the CT forum in Topix. Pastor Cymbala is a LIAR. And so is his son in law. They have been caught in so many lies it is unbelievable. If they find out anyone is posting they will ruin your name, (well except for that Carmen person, it seems they are feeding her information about peole and using her as thier pawn).

So please save your super self righteous speech for another topic

  25. Financial Corruption Says:

SEEMS that another financial mishap at BT has surfaced on the Blog. The brother who got out of prison and was adopted by BT was forced to claim he was paid $1,200 per month from the church. But the church does not pay him. In fact the church was given over a million dollars to take care of him. Very strange things going on at that church. I think someone should contact the IRS.

  26. Re the Toledos Says:

God help us all…the Toledos are coming back to NY? I guess all the damage they did to all those people in Chicago has finally caught up with them, so Papa Cymbala will fabricate some story about them “being called” back to BT. I guarantee you it wasn’t by God, but thank God they are leaving Chicago. I just hope Al doesn’t punch out his brother in law again, or gossip about his father-in-law to everyone like he did in Chicago. At least Al isn’t prejudiced about who who slanders…church members who leave without his permission, his own father in law and brother-in-law; former pastors who left his church in Chicago because they saw what an abusive control freak he is. But now Brooklyn, Be Warned!! Now there are more Cymbala offspring coming to BT to strut around and be put in charge of a ministry where more innocent people will be damaged at the hands of these egomaniacs. I wonder who is going to lose their jobs at BT to make room for the Toledos? Remember what they did to that precious man, Pastor Hammond, when Toledo first came on the scene? I wonder how much of the church funds PJC is going to pay for their house, and how many church workers will have to remodel the home, shovel their snow in the winter…oh, and if anyone is looking for a job, I’m sure Chrissy needs a couple of nannies that the church will pay for. Maybe that’s where the Bishop’s money is going?

  27. steven Says:

You have no idea how much I hate the Cymbalas and the Toledos. These people think they are God and above the law. They are all liars and they are all going to pay for all the pain they have caused many of us. This is not how God treats his people. Let the people see them for who they really are. They need to be exposed!

  28. Carmen Says:

I have suffer much pain under this leadership. They do not give a good testamonies when they act like this. But God is in Control.

  29. Hi Carmen Collazzo Says:

Carmen, is there no end to your sick, twisted, evil, hate-filled mind? Like my brother would put his name down, saying that. He has never said any of the hate-filled garbage that you have posted…he has only defended himself against your sick, twisted, untruthful attacks on him and his wife. But the only one who is going to be exposed is you, so keep blogging; it’s just more ammunition for our case. Why don’t you go counsel some Be Transformed members at Brooklyn Tab; it’s people like you that have spread your poison to that church. We don’t hate anyone; we hate the lies, hypocrisy, abuse, cover-ups and unaccountability of some of the leadership in both churches, and YOU are the worst offender of all. How do you sleep at night?

  30. To Carmen Says:

Most of the pain you’ve suffered has been self-inflicted because of your deception towards the Body of Christ. I truly feel sorry for you.

  31. Susan L Says:

Although I did publicly apologize to Pastor Cymbala for posting my true comments about the inclusion of my sister in his book, and for other serious issues that needed addresssing, I am sorry to say that our family met with Pastor Cymbala, and he refused to hold his son-in-law and daughter accountable for the terrible things they did in Chicago; they know the details, I don’t need to reiterate. He apologized “on their behalf”, but that was just a cop-out so he wouldn’t have to deal with their sin. He made excuses for them, and then did not uphold his word to “seriously deal with” the Be Transformed Leader, Carmen Collazzo, who he said would never hold a leadership position again because of the garbage she posted on all blogs about my family. That is because holding her accountable would incriminate his son in law’s involvement in the slander campaign against my family. So, Carmen is still in leadership, and is still posting her poison about my family. Pastor Cymbala is only concerned about the reputation of his son-in-law and daughter, who have committed terrible transgressions against many people at CT, but he refuses to do anything about it. So just as I publicly apologized for posting the truth about the book, I am now NOT APOLOGIZING for posting the truth about him, his lack of integrity and his single-minded concern for only himself, his family, and HIS financial interests. He lied to my family, and this is a Pastor who influences millions of people? Pray for his eyes to be opened and to stop hiding the wrongdoing at that church.

  32. leon Says:

I am a memeber of BT since 1984, and I feel so much pain when I see the stuff on the board. I know steven and his wife very well. I love them, two open, real people I have met there.

I give alot of my money at BT and I pray that all this mess I am reading about is not true. As believers let us talk about the real issues in love, forgive and move on. Let us begin to fast and pray for each other and the Pastors. I know that no one can play church and get away with it.

  33. Linda Says:

Our church is currently using Pastor Cymbala’s book “Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire,” for our Bible Study. Our Pastor is trying emphasize the need for prayer and encourage more attendance to our Sunday Evening Prayer Services. The BT story is truly amazing and inspiring.

Can I believe the negative things said about Pastor Cymbala on this website? YES, I can. He is not divine, he is human just like we all are. What I would like to know is why the members of BT do not utilize the wonderful, powerful tool that built that church, for this problem. You belong to God not Pastor Cymbala, and God will take care of you. He will reveal to your pastor the error of his ways or remove him, but YOU are the ones with the power to ‘cry out to the Lord.’ Use it! Seek healing and restoration first. If that become impossible, God will remove this blight, but not without your prayers.

  34. living a lie Says:

i don’t know if you have checked that site recently but they have also been adding many comments up until this last friday! i was astounded to read through all of it, but not surprised. and sister langella, I am so sorry to hear all about the garbage with pastor. it sounds just like the dear old crazy man. God bless berta for being so strong as well.

  35. John A Says:

used to play guitar with the worship band at BT between 1999 and 2001. I played the 9 am and 12 o’clock services Nothing on this board sounds
strange to me. I knew it was only a matter of time
before their deeds would be exposed. I nearly lost
my faith, because of the horrible abuse of people I saw and experienced myself. But Praise be to Jesus
I am in a solid reformed church. No Ego-maniacal
leadership to contend with. Believe me BT was horrible. SPY VS SPY best describes the atmosphere.
I left there shell shocked from their heartless, cold ways.
BTW, I am in a wonderful church in Staten Island. Our pastor is meek and Christ-like. Here is a link http://www.sermonaudio.com/search.asp

  36. J Says:

I was a member of BT from 1977 to 1986, and was involved in a slew of ministries like the choir, children’s to name a few. Still know a lot of people there. My hope is that one day, a light will shine and bring all this nonsense out in the open so that true Christlike leadership can bring renewal and that other innocent people will not suffer.

Because unfortunately in American Christianity, power, notoriety, fame and perception of wealth in confused with God’s blessing. In my life, I once found people full of God’s blessing. These were Christians in places like Peru, who showed Christ’s example of love and humility, reaching out to others in need. Where Pastors lived among their people, not in some $5,000,000 mansion. A church were people who had nothing, gave their all the had to further God’s work. Not like Brooklyn Tabernacle, let me share an experience at BT. I know a married couple, close friends, who ran a ministry in New England. They came to BT to present the ministry. Pastor Cymbala, gets up and says, let’s take a second offering to help this ministry, He stands and says, All who agrees to give the entire offering to this ministry, say Amen. Of Course everyone says Amen. The offering nets roughly $11,000. Do you know how much that ministry received from BT of the $11,000, they sent the ministry $1,000.

By the way, I know Steve Langella from way back when, he is a wonderful guy. Roberta Langella is still a saint in my book. Examples of people who were used and abused by the Cymbala clan.

  37. DebbieE Says:

The Lord is gracious and compassionate. I know pastors are not without fault, but these two pastors (Cymbala and Toledo) are men who seek the Lord. Let’s not be the ones who pass judgement on them. If we see something not in line with the truth we should lovingly pass a note to them, but then move on and not talk about it with others. In your prayer closet the Lord can do a work in their hearts

We have to remember there are ALWAYS two sides to the story. We have no idea the things that are said to bully a pastor into doing things “their” way. If a pastor listened to everyone that wanted things done a different way….it would be total chaos. It only makes sense that if you do not agree with the vision then you need to go a church that shares your vision, instead of expecting the pastor to follow every wave of the sea trying to do things the way of the one with the biggest “holler”. The enemy is out to destroy….but woe to him/her that is the tool used to do that.

If something grieves you, if something is done that is sinful and wrong….grieve and pray your heart out asking God to do a convicting work. Then stay humble and keep serving and loving. If an unbeliever saw this slander would they be drawn to Christ? We need to be wise.

    • CA Says:

You are obvioulsy very decieved and drinking the kool aid. So what you are saying in reality is this: Men who seek God can do whatever they want and abuse thier positions and mistreat God’s sheep and abuse the money they are given all because they seek God? So seeking God gives you a free pass? great theology! I will seek God and then rob a bank. I am sure it will be ok, because remember, I seek God.

Here is Pastor Cymbala’s home on TRULI http://www.trulia.com.

Look at the pictures and ask yourself this question. Should a pastor who boasts that the majority of his congregants are black and poor live large in a nieghboorhood where african americans population percentage is:

    White 77.2%
    African American 0.5%

If he does not take any mone from his books or the choir where does he get this kind of money? Plus a $700,000 vacation home in Florida?

  39. Laura C Says:

well after reading just some of the junk, more than likely people are not praying like they did in years of great growth. God is still the Great God he has been in past years. I stumbled across this site, and as a pastor’s wife of a small church, after 8 mos. being there, realize how people get so concerned about the business end of the church, and spend entirely hours compared to seconds of prayer and seeking God, I mean spend so much time digging dirt, criticising, Romans 13 says so much about you people who are not happy…..believe me if the sower of evil would spend as much time in prayer and fasting and encouraging the brother, the church God has call you to would increase in strength and wisdom and see amazing results as in “Fresh Wind Fresh FIre” . If you are one disgruntled church member….Be careful. God is still God!

    • johnny Says:

Do you live in a 5 million dollor home too? Don’t lecture us !

    • To Laura C Says:

You seem to be suggesting that we simply pray as if prayer is the fix all. That is what PJC preaches but that is not what he practices. Are you a member of BT? If so you would know like the rest that Fresh Wind Fresh Fire sounds great but if you work on staff it does not reperesnt the true spirit of BT.

Cymbala exploited people who were not ready for the limelight and they let him know that but still pressured them to tell their stories. Some of them are not serving the Lord today because they were thrown into the lime light. Digging Dirt, Criticizing?? So your idea of criticizing is exposing a fraud and abuser? I know, go to him privately…. That has been done and those who did it were fired. Wake up sister! There is corruption at the top. No accountabilty, mispending of funds on personal agendas and property. Disgruntled? You learned well from Cybmala, discredit the victim as disgruntled. Isn’ that what Islam does. Stones the woman who was raped?

Cymbala went off somewhere. He still preaches truth but in practice it is a whole other ballgame. Sad. Very Sad.

  40. johnny Says:

Your indifference to the pain of all thes people speaks volumes.

  41. JD Says:

Laura C. You are so right. Just think how it would be if Jim Cymbala would stop sending his henchmen out and spies trying to control everything and all gossip going on at BT and in leadership. If they would just pray everything would go away. Just turn your head away from the millions of mispent money, abused people because God does not want us to be mean so we should just love everyone. Maybe we should confront pastor cymbala. Wait, many have and were fired. OK maybe we should be like most of the pastors and staff members and just mind our business and turn our head. OK thanks we will do that.

Brooklyn Tabernacle Brooklyn, New York $22,900,000
To be Fair I do not think they pay that much now. This is all public info anyone can get it.

As of 2009 The approximate value was 1.95 Million.

The House was purchased on April 11, 1997 for $825,000.
The Morgtage Amount was for $214,000.

So he probably sold his home and put down $611,000 Cash. So one will have to find out how much he sold his old home for.

Now 1997 was before the Market went crazy so that is a very expensive house in 1997.

    2009 – The Land Value was 284,883
    2009 – Improvement Value was $863,267
    Total: 1,959,000.
    Taxes for 2004 were $9,772

Today the Taxes are $13,710 per year.
The Value of the House is $3,800,000.00

That is just his Queens Home. His Florida home was purchased in 2006 for $745,800.00 through Diversified Home Mortgage Inc. The Taxes for that Home for 2008 Tax year is $11,595.00.

So Taxes alone for both homes is $25,305 annual just for Property Taxes. Now add two mortgages. Expenses to keep up the homes. Renovations. Well Wait!!

Renovations might be somewhat tricky. One of the posts on this blog claim that major portions of renovations on the NY house were done by Church workers while on the church time clock. If this is true then that means that Pastor Cymbala renovated his home for free because the labor was paid for by the church. Church money that comes from tithing single mothers and elderly members who live off of public assistance?

That is illegal (I think) and BT could lose its income tax status if the IRS were to find out that His house he is now selling for $3.8 million dollars at a $3 million dollar profit was party renovated by employees of Brooklyn Tabernacle while they were being paid by the church. Now granted this is all hearsay, at least that is what one post on this blog claims.

    see post

    http://www.topix.com/forum/religion/TAK4NFJGF

But since there were no employee names mentioned nobody can ask them if they did work on the house. In fact it is said that someone confronted him about that very matter. And shortly after that they were fired.

  43. Former BT member Says:

Until approximately a month ago, I would have laughed off any criticism of Brooklyn Tabernacle. Then I saw the hypocrisy with my own eyes, up close and personal.

I belong to a private prison ministry, that up until last month had been closely affiliated with BT. We recruited members from BT with their blessing, we had our annual children’s party there, and we referred inmates nearing release there. A now-former member, who was dissatisfied with how things were being run (really, he complained about everything), went to “Rev. Jim” and whinged about the ministry.

After the associate pastors led the Spanish Inquisition with every single member of the ministry, we were all called to a meeting where we were told that our ministry had been severed from BT and that BT would form its own ministry. We were given a choice: Join them, remain with the private ministry, or be members of both (although Pastor Burgos and Deacon Portalatin cautioned that there may be a future “conflict of interest” – their words, not mine.) We were also told that we could take the BT training no matter what our decisions were. At that time, I chose to be a member of both.

On September 5th, I received an e-mail from the deacon asking to meet with me in a week’s time. I responded, advising that I would not be available that day due to a commitment with the private ministry at one of the jails. At that time, the deacon told me (still via e-mail) that I would have to choose between the two, and that the training was for BT prison ministry members ONLY.

At this point, the hypocrisy became blatantly and painfully obvious. I chose the private ministry. Just to make sure I’d heard correctly, at the next private ministry meeting, I asked other members to clarify what Pastor Burgos and Deacon Portalatin had said. I *had* heard correctly.

Yesterday, I attended services at BT for the last time. After seeing the deacon work the sanctuary like a politician and hearing “Rev. Jim” extol the excitement of working in a prison ministry with no facilities to go to, I got up and left, in an absolute rage.

Never again will I enter their facility. I’ve been lied to repeatedly throughout my life, but to be lied to by supposed men of God is an outrage. I’m not giving up on God – after all, He cannot lie – and I’m looking for a new church home, but I will never again attend any function at or sponsored by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Liars. Nor will I recommend this “church” to ANYONE.

  44. Phil Hoover Says:

I was part of Chicago Tabernacle for three years. I first joined right after the congregation was established…it was a life-changing experience for me…because I saw how HYPOCRITICAL some people in leadership can become when they have “all power.” Al Toledo is a great speaker, but not a good shepherd at all…Chrissy is a wonderful musician, and directs a great choir….

I left of my own volition, and was lied about upon my leaving. I know MANY, MANY people who have left this congregation, because of the abuse.

  45. Nana Amenra Says:

I agree with you. I myself have seen the rulership practices of BT. The day they told me something ridiculous was the last day of my membership and I had been a member for practically 19 years by then. Why do people support this ministry. If you’re not giving me the kind of respect, consideration, and cooperation that you demand for yourself, then I don’t have any time for you and I definitely don’t have no cash!
This is not a difficult problem people.

  46. roberta the real one Says:

    Hi
I am well and in Florida I am writing my true story . I was recently contacted by an ex choir member on facebook She and two other people confirmed thaPJC slandered me from the pulpit in fall of 2008 right after the book You were made for more debacle. I have retained an attorney and I have filed a defamation of character/slander suite against him It was at the 12 o’clock service I have contacted the associate press /fbi/NY Times/Daily News/attorney Geeneral of NY/
I have lead them to topix.com and to the blog I am going to face PJC and I need your prayer’s . Bless you Roberta

  47. Sandy Piano Says:

I had never heard of any of these people or this church until I found out just last week that CT was trying to buy a beloved, vibrant community center movie theater in my neighborhood, gut it and convert it into a church. Although they were directed to other empty churches in the area, they insist on having this building, though the neighborhood does not want the theater to close and ruin the economy of the neighborhood. My head is swimming after reading all this – but it does make some things clearer. I’m curious – what awful thing happened in Chicago that they almost went back to NYC?

    • Wayne Arthur Says:

I heard from this member…i heard from this person or that one! c’mon…like really??

All you guys should feel shame about yr comments and judgements upon this man. Even if these reports were remotely accurate your attitude should be one of concern and prayer for Mr Cymbala-Instead all that is coming across is venim and a desire to slander this mans reputation-obviously there have been a few hurt people who are choosing to retain biterness against Jim and are refusing to forgive. The rest of you are just sucking it up cos you enjoy a good juicy meal by pulling others down-this is the work of Satan.
Just because you hear a rumor about someone doesnt make it true and the facts are often distorted because of a desire to discredit the person concerned. Get wise people!!

Honestly if some of you lived in The time of the Apostle paul you would probably be listening right now to Alexander the coppersmith who was going about breathing out slander against Paul and his ministry.

James tells us that people that gossip with their tongue do so because it is fuelled by a hellish source. Quit slander, repent and only use yr tongue to build up God’s people and give God praise.

      • Wayne Arthur Says:

        P.s
Also if you are one of the ones who have been hurt by the ministry at BTC then consider forgiveness, not a law suit!!! Scripture forbids us to take such action against one its a bad testimony.
So grow some spiritual character and Forgive!!

  48. jennygirl Says:

It is sooo sad to think that so many pastors think that either their children or son-in-laws have to inherit the churches that God loaned to them. I was a member at BT for many years, sang in the choir and served in other ministries as well. Problems will always arise when you have people whom because they are pastors sons and daughters are treated differently than you. Take for example the choir- we had those who were clubbing and going out and drink on Saturday nights, yet because they were so and so’s daughter or son that was ok because their parents were annointed and so were they ha ha.
When recording Carol Cymbala only wanted the beautiful voices to sing and the others to keep quiet. The ones asked to keep quiet were usually the faithful praying ones, and the singers would be so proud that they not the others were singing. I could tell you insider tales that go on, but it would be never ending. If Jesus does not come soon, there are a lot of things BT has to work out..
Like what really happened to the prayer band and Pastor Ware, God rest his soul, he passed away on Sunday a broken and dissapointed man, but Jesus still reigns!!!
Thats another story I will tell later on!!!
NO wonder the bible says to pray for your leaders and those in authority, because God knows that the ministries He gave them would be in chaos without our prayers..
    More to come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. chloe Says:

i just read PJC’s book fresh wind, fresh fire a month ago…all the stories touched my heart and changed my prayer life…i trusted God more about my all concerns…
my heart cries painfully when i read this article, all the negative comments about BT& PJC…
i believe our God knows all the things that happened at BT & PJC…let me share something…i am on nobody’s side here…the Lord just moved me to write these things…
In the Bible, the disciples walked w/ Jesus for 3 1/2 years,He taught them about who He was & the Father…Jesus showed them great miracles,He even showed His disciples His real nature as God the Son…the disciples witnessed all that Jesus did during His time…but when He was betrayed, arrested, falsely accused, scourged to death…who stood by His side?
    NO ONE!
at the cross He displayed how much He loves all Sinners…Jesus redeemed us from all our sins…
if Jesus God’s Son experienced this kind of maltreatment during His time, how much more His work & ministry in all parts of the world?…the church, pastors, workers &even the choir is never exempted from the enemy’s attack to destroy God’s work…

i don’t know if everything said here is based on truth?all i noticed was bitterness against the Leaders and the Church…questioning the financial status????
i’m sorry to say this but, maybe you were mad because you didn’t get what you want, or the way you want things be?…or maybe you loosed your focus on Jesus?all you see was where did the money go?why is PJC living like a king?PJC is using my story just to gain more money…his a control freak…
my brothers and sisters in the Lord, why not seek deep in your hearts, kindly ask yourself where did all these negative things that you see started?why did i questioned about the church finances?is it my money that made the church grow?BT & PJC is nothing if it was not for my financial support…what is your motive?Does God allowed these things to happen? Just remember King Solomon…

every churches in all parts of the world have encountered the same problems & controversies like the ones you all exposed here…it is my prayer that God will make things right…at the appointed time…
